This rivalry has been memorable for the two most storied basketball franchises in NBA history. The rivalry had been less intense since the retirements of Magic Johnson & Larry Bird in the early 1990s, but in 2008, the rivalry was reborn as the Lakers & Celtics met in the finals for the first time since 1987. The Celtics currently lead in total championships with 17 to the Lakers' 14; together, the two teams' 31 championships account for half of the 1962 championships in NBA history.
For the first time in 21 years, the Lakers & Celtics faced off in the 2008 finals to determine who's the best team in the NBA. Now I know some people are really good fans of the Lakers & I respect those who stand for their team. But when it comes ot the statistics of this rivalry, the Boston Celtics have been ahead of the Lakers for as long as anyone can remember.
Since 1959, The Lakers & Celtics have met a total of 11 times in the NBA finals, with Boston winning the first eight meetings & Los Angeles winning the next two. In the most recent meeting of the two franchises, the Celtics won the Championship series 4 games to 2 over the Lakers. In fact, it was that victory that made Celtics captain Paul Pierce MVP of the series.
I may not know much about the sports world, but I do know about statistics. In the case of this rivalry, not even MVP player for the Lakers, Kobe Bryant, was enough to match the intensity of the Celtics. Both teams have fought hard to prove who's the top dogs of the NBA, this rivalry has been the most talked about event since the Miami Heat won their first NBA finals.
No rivalry can compare to the Lakers vs. Celtics. The next time they meet, they will be more determined than ever to prove themselves worthy of top NBA talent. Every counter between these teams have become more intense, more exciting, & most sensational than ever before. Who knows, twenty years from now, the guys at NBA headquarters should consider making a DVD collectors set of the most historic rivlary in Basketball. Until the next time they meet, game on!
